Thanks. By what I noticed this week in this subject on the tongues, we will not conclude it tonight, as I had wrote this our third message, but we will conclude it next week, and I think that will be the most important one, the real meaning and message of tongues as given us in the Bible. So we must give the earth next Sunday night, but also next Sunday morning as we continue our subject in Acts. such as repentance that we commenced this morning. So we turn our Bibles over to First Corinthians chapter fourteen. First Corinthians chapter fourteen. I know that there's going to be quite a few here trying to find pause and take another subject of this kind. That's to be accepted. For instance, I was talking to a doctor downtown this weekend. He said, well, I was talking to a lady who was out at your meeting a couple of Sunday nights ago, and she says that she certainly doesn't go along with you, because you thought that the Messiah hadn't come yet. She said, she didn't believe that. Well, he said, I've been out at the chapel a lot of times, lady, and I know that's not his belief. He certainly does believe the Messiah has come. but to show how they can misunderstand things, I mentioned that the coming of Christ as seen in Acts chapter two relative to the tongues has reference to the future. Christ certainly was born in Bethlehem and he was the Jewish Messiah, but he was rejected as such, and now we have the churches. And it definitely says when those tongues are given or when the Spirit is poured out upon all flesh, that universal It will be in that day when the sun shall be turned to darkness, the moon into blood. It will be that great and terrible day of the Lord. And that is when Israel will recognize soon after that that Christ is their Messiah. And that's what I said, that the coming of the Messiah, when he does come, it will come with signs and wonders in heaven and on earth. And that's where much of what is found in that prophecy in chapter two will be fulfilled from the prophecy of Job. Another thing, last Sunday night, a couple of young fellows came up after the meeting, and they said that what about the angels? Don't they speak in tongues? I said, no. Well, it says so over there in chapter twelve, And verses one and two, I said, Well, what does it say there in those verses? In first Corinthians twelve. Now concerning spiritual gifts, Noah's verse chapter thirteen in verse one, Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not loved, I am become a sounding brass and a tinkling symbol. hasn't anything to do with angels speaking in tongues. He's showing the possibility of a man having eloquence, fluency in preaching, and even preaching from the Bible, from the Bible, and not having the love of God in his heart. He's not talking about angels using tongues. When I thought of it, I thought, well, if I have the time in the next few days, I'm going through with my Bible and find out how many times angels spoke to men and to women, and every time they spoke an intelligent language, they spoke in words and language that the person they were talking to understand completely, and they didn't need an interpreter, showing that angels did not speak in tongues. They spoke in that one language that God sent them from heaven to declare, and when they spoke their individual, the individual knew exactly what they were saying. And so in that passage he's pointing out that if a man were to speak as fluidly, as eloquently as an angel, and doesn't have a love of Christ in his heart, it's a lot of sounding facts and fainting symbols. So it goes to show how you can misinterpret the word of God. And we must be careful, as we pointed out previously, We've got to rightly divide the word of truth. One day this week, in fact, I think it was about Thursday, I was thinking on this subject, and I took my pencil, and I wrote something down, some of these things I like to keep, and I wrote this down, and I'm going to read it to you exactly as I wrote it down. When people neglect true study of the Bible, they look for some emotional experience or excitement. It's significant that this new wave of tongues started with state formal ritualistic churches, modernistic churches, Anglican churches. Now, we don't have those Anglican churches down the south, but they are a lot of them up in Canada where I came from, and there are a lot in the northern part of the United States. They are next to the Catholics, they have their priests and so on. And so they are a ritualistic, formalistic church, and it seems that that denomination has led the band in this recent wave of the last few years in the tongue movement. That's why I want you to notice. It's significant that this new wave of tongues started with or in a staid, formal, ritualistic church, the Anglicans and the Protestant denominations that are modernistic and formal. They say they find a new liberty, a new freedom from the formalism or from the establishment. They have now found a new freedom, a liberty they didn't have, in the formalistic, ritualistic churches that they speak of as the establishment. For the Lord, I thought of it in this light. It's like the hippie movement. When it began, they wanted freedom. They wanted liberty. For what? Moral law. They wanted freedom. They wanted liberty, they wanted freedom from the laws of justice, the laws that govern our land, thus freedom from this crime. In other words, their liberty, their freedom was not right. It ended up worse than what they had, first of all. And I believe today that a lot of people are turning to tongues because of the deadness the ritualistic atmosphere, the formality that are in a lot of churches, and they want something that he can express, and they're turning to something, and sad to say, they're just going off to the other extreme, and they're going to be just as bad off as they were in the beginning. So after I wrote that down, and I read it to you exactly, I put this down too, free from, they want freedom from moral standards, free love, freedom from standards of law, free to commit crime, but this will not satisfy. And I had a note, it sounds like hypnotism in a measure to me. I didn't know until just about three hours after I was going to read a magazine. I picked up a magazine, and I'm always glad when I can get some confirmation. And this magazine gives more or less a research into the tongue movement, going into it thoroughly. For instance, you have in this research a result of studies by linguists, psychologists, theologians, anthropists, psychiatists, doctors, and preachers. And these men have come from colleges. They know Greek, they know Hebrew. And this is what struck me, and I'm going to read it exactly. After writing down what I did, I was glad to get this. Dr. Kildell pointed out in his study, many references could be cited in order to illustrate the relationship between docile alia, that the tongue movement, and certain hypnotic states, it will be noted that hypnosis and glossoblelia are introduced in a similar manner, just as a hypnotic subject must put this trust in the hypnotist, so the tongue speaker must place his will in the authority of this figure. or personality, whoever it may be. Hypnosis and tongue-speaking are remarkably similar, almost as if the Trophilanias had allowed himself to be hypnotized." Now that's startling. And it goes on, and I'm not going to give it all. He says, you'll notice where the tongue movement flourishes. It's generally with a strong leader. And he's able to get across to his audience that there's something lacking. There's a vacancy. There's a vacancy. And he needs freedom. He needs liberty. There's something he hasn't got with all his efforts and endeavors. And he captures their attention. He's on a note that human hearts are hungry for something to satisfy. has this man got what I want? And more or less he worked them up into a state of hysteria until finally they find themselves fell down, almost picked up by the hands of the air, and a lot of them are sobbing, and then they start rolling on the floor. We'll have more to say about this later on. And I firmly believe that hypnotism has a lot to do with this movement. for it strength to me in reading articles in the newspaper and in these magazines that where they have these big tongue movements, little or nothing is said about the death of Christ. Little or nothing is said about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Little or nothing is said about other fundamental truths in the Bible. It's tongues, tongues, tongues, tongues. Well, I'm not warning tongues. I'd be happy if I could speak the English language a little better than I do. I've got all my time cut out to get the Gospel across clearly to my audience. And now I'm going to read further. And this, if you will, by a Pentecostal preacher, the best for a new religion experience, why the sudden new interest in Thessalalia or the tongue movement, as Dr. Samaritan said in the quote just given, people are looking for a new and better religious experience. One high church official, a Pentecostal, himself stated, people are turning to Gospels because churches have become so unspiritual and out of touch with the needs of the people. There he comes, people are theologians as well. would agree with him, more and more people are not finding satisfaction in their traditional church with its traditional rites. We have already shown that modern tongue speaking is not parallel to that of the New Testament. According to both theological and linguistic scholars, some may definitely derive a temporary lift and feeling of euphoria or an unaccountable feeling of well-being. And they receive this feeling from tongues, but so do many people derive a temporary lift from antheonines and euphoria from heroin. Now that's pretty strong language. Just as the drug-taker, the tongue-user must relinquish some of his mind control and willpower. the potential dangers in this should be obvious. The ancient sage Solomon said, There is nothing new under the sun. Included in that is tongues speaking. Or motherhood. Including in that is the tongues speaking. Hundreds of years before Christ, the Bible prophet Isaiah said in chapter eight and nineteen, He said, And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards, and them that peep, and them that mutter. Why should not a people seek after their God in this fashion? Even back then they were seeking after God. They would even suit like Saul to the use of a witch. Now it shows how far a person can go, seeking something that God never intended them to have. Let me tell you, friend, that the Lord Jesus Christ in all his fullness, in all his loveliness, in all his beauty, is not sufficient to give you a satisfied heart pounds won't. Pounds won't. Only Christ can fill the human heart and satisfy the human heart and he doesn't need any tongues. Now my Bible tells me what the fruit of tongues is. The fruit of tongues given us in Galatians five and twenty is this. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, nigh things, and no tongues mentioned. That's the fruit of the Spirit. Tongues are not the fruit of the Spirit. Now this is your Bible. You can read that in Galatians two-twenty, if you will, or Galatians five-twenty. But I want to mention this too. You can speak tongues until you fall exhausted on the floor. You can pick up snakes until you can't pick up any more. and not get bit. But also you can heal the sick. You can drink poison. You can cast out devils and go to hell. And I can give you a Bible for that. Matthew seven, twenty-two and three. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name done many wonderful works. In thy name cast out devils. And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you. Depart from me, ye workers of iniquity. He didn't say I knew you once, but I don't know you now. He said, I never did know you. And Christ in my name, ye cast out demons, ye did many wonderful works. Depart from me, ye workers of iniquity. I never knew. That's your Bible. You can have Christ angle to hell, but you can have these other things angle to hell. The man who has Christ has all of this necessary to be happy in this life and happy in the man. And as this article, it's quite an extensive article, points out, They claim a big percentage of these people that become hysterical and fall for this tongue movement. After they've been examined, there's been a bad reaction, and doctors have discovered that many of them are emotionally unstable. And I can see that, just like taking a drink of Coca-Cola or coffee or whatever, any of stimulation, I'm not against your drinking coffee and tea. But I'm just saying this, that anything that gives you a pickup afterwards will give you a let down. And if you don't believe that, you stop drinking coffee and see how let down you'll be. It's a stimulant. It's something to take you up. And that's true with this tongue movement. They've got to keep reading these tongues. Where they get excited, all work done. Ecstasy. But wait until all wears off. They hit the body. You don't have that experience when you're occupied with Jesus Christ. He's the same yesterday and today and will be forever. When you have Christ, you're trusting Him, He fills your heart, you have an even peace, a solid peace, but nothing in life can disturb or take away. There's nothing expanding about Christ. something solid, substantial, and real about the Lord Jesus Christ. You compare these things and see if it's not so in your Bible. Miracles, miraculous signs, rather, marked, and this is very significant, miraculous signs mark the beginning of Israel's history. History. Go back and read the opening chapters of Exodus. the miraculous signs that were performed then upon the Egyptians and then through the wilderness. But they stopped there. When Israel as a nation crossed over Jordan and was upon this land, all those miracles stopped. Because we pointed out last week, Joshua was given the word of God. At the end of the forty years in the wilderness, God says, you've got my word now. You don't need these signs and these miracles. You've got to believe in my word. And the church began the same way in the Acts of the Apostles with signs and wonders and miracles, because they didn't yet have the New Testament. But after when the New Testament was given, no more signs, but it tells you in chapter thirteen whether there be signs they shall see. So whether they come, they And a lot of things will cease, and did cease after the word of God in centrality was given. And again at the beginning of the coming day of the Lord, there are still going to be more signs and more wonders. Even the man of sin, the Antichrist, is going to make an image of the beast to speak. And there will be a lot of signs and wonders in that coming day. And so at the beginning of Israel's history, at the beginning of the church history, at the beginning of the coming day of the world, which is a great tribulation, going into millennium, there will still be signs and wonders there. And in each case, those signs and wonders stop. For in the millennium, after all those signs and wonders that God has shown upon his enemies, as he did upon Egypt, and also sown before his earthly people, is he? Then the millennia, they'll have one language, one tongue, Christ will reign, and all will be under his glorious sway. No need of signs and miracles then. Christ fills the field. And so if you look at these things in the light of revealed truth, you'll not be running amiss. In the Bible, you only have two books after the birth of the church that mention tongues. Now Christ did. In Mark sixteen, he said, These signs shall follow them that believe. They shall pass out demons, heal the sick, drink deadly poison, pick up snakes, servants, and stick in tongues. I think, he said, this will follow those who believe, and those things stop after the word of God was given at the end of the book of the Acts. And as we pointed out, you'll notice these people who want to speak in tongues don't panel snakes. It's too big a risk. They don't break any deadly thing. It's too big a risk. They might die. They don't cast out demons. and they don't lay their hands upon the sick, and they're recovered. Because if you lay your hands on a person and they're recovered, the undertaker is going to get it in the end anyway. They heal every sickness but the last one. But these people, they're clamoring now for tongues, and there's no danger in tongues. Why don't they try this other side? But the two books in your Bible that deal with tongues is the book of Acts. You find in chapter two, you find in chapter ten, you find in chapter eighteen, and chapter nineteen. We'll take them up in detail, God willing, next Sunday night. May you come to this epistle of Corinthians. Chapters twelve, thirteen and fourteen. And gentlemen, I want you to notice this. This one of these young fellows last, Sunday night. He said, well, he said, I don't believe that was in the church where they spoke in tongues. In other words, you mean there was a great unruly mob today, or there is at times when they had these so-called tongue meetings, a great mob. They're not in church at all in many places, not as they are in church building. And he didn't believe that these tongues had anything to do with an organized Well, all he's got to do is read this chapter, and he'll find out that the church is mentioned eight times in this chapter. And he's reporting to the church at Corinth that was an established assembly. And it's this church he's running to, to correct the abuse of tongues, It's not an unruly mob. It's a church that has found Christ, and it will obey in a good measure of the Word of God, but they've got signed drafts. And Paul is writing this episode to straighten them out, to correct their abuse of these signed gifts. Now let us get into some of those questions I promised you that we would be asking tonight. questions I think that may come up in your mind. Most of all, is the gift of tongues used as a sign to unbelievers or to believers? Let's see what the Bible says in the fourteen chapter here. Verse twenty-two. What do you say in verse twenty-two? Wherefore tongues are for a sign, and if you want to read to Acts, turn to Acts two-eight, it's a sign to Israel. Wherefore tongues are for the sign, not to them that believe, believers, but to them that believe not. And you'll notice these big tongue gatherings. They're supposed to be attended And these ones who are taking part in tongues claim to be believers. They claim they're Christians. And this is an additional blessing to their being saved. It distinctly tells you here that tongues is assigned to them that believe not. I'll read that right there in that text. Therefore tongues are for assigned not to them that believe. not to those who profess to be Christian, but to them that believe not, but prophesy, preaching, service not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. In other words, he's going to prove clearly that the gift of tongues, if it was used in the vision, it was a message to the unbelievers. And today those who claim to have the gift of tongues and speak in tongues, they say, we're believers. We're Christians. Then something's gone wrong with the Word of God. And I'd like you to notice, too, over in the fourth chapter where we have the list of tongues showing you the order that's given, verse one of chapter twelve. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the Spirit of God called Jesus a curse, and that no man can say that Jesus the Lord but by the Holy Spirit. Now, there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are diversities of administration, but the same law. And there are diversities of operation, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit with all. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom. To another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit. To another faith by the same spirit, to another the gift of healing by the same spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another diver's kinds of tongues, and to another interpretation. At the bottom of this list of gifts, tongues, now they were so important, as these people claimed it, Why wouldn't it be at the top of the list? Certainly it would be. And furthermore you'll find that in the fourteenth chapter as well. Or the twenty-eight verse of that same chapter. Notice the twenty-eighth chapter. The twenty-eighth verse, rather, of chapter twelve. And God has set some in the church, first the apostle, secondly... prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracle, then gifts of healing, then health, then governments, diversities of tongues. Tongues is at the bottom of the list in both cases. And seeing, he says, firstly, secondly, thirdly, he's taking the gifts in their order of importance, and he leaves the tongue to the land. that order in itself teaches a lesson, that tongues do not have the prominence in the New Testament. They are not looked upon as important the way they are being used today. In fact, my knowledge they are sinful, the way they are being used today. Now here is another. Do you emphasize speaking in tongues, in preference to prophecy, or preaching clearly in known language? If you do, you have the wrong emphasis. We've just pointed that out in the first three verses of chapter fourteen. Follow after love and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that He may speak in tongues, is that it? No. But rather that He may prophesy, for He that speaks in an unknown tongue, and I want to say this, that word unknown is mentioned. six times, I think it is, in this chapter. And it's not in the original language, and all you've got to do is look at it. It's in italics. Every time it's in italics. Verse two, verse thirteen, and also verse twenty-seven, verse twenty-nine, verse nineteen, and then verse And also verse thirteen, here are the references to that word unknown. And in each case, if you look at your Bible, you'll see it's in italics. It's a word that was added by the translator. And it's certainly misleading, getting people to believe that there are a lot of unknown tongues. Languages the world's never heard of. I don't believe it for a minute. I believe every gift of tongue that God gave in the beginning had someone in the audience, someone in the world who could see that language. I don't think it's a lot of gibberish, a lot of talk and chatter that no one understands. That's the misleading of that word unknown tongue. It's not in the original. It's put there by the translators who see by the italics that are used. Then again, do you insist that all believers should have this gift? If so, they go against the revelation of God's Word. Look at verses twenty-eight and thirty of chapter twelve. I think we've already read this. Some have set some in the church, just some, not all. First Apostles, Secondary Prophets, Thirdly Teachers, After that, miracles, then gifts of healing help governments, diversities of tongues. He says, are all apostles? The answer is no. Are all prophets? The answer is no. Are all teachers? The answer is no. Are all workers of miracles? The answer is no. Have all the gifts of healing? No. Do all speak with tongues? No. Do all interpret? No. That's the teaching of the passage. Going to show very plainly in this passage here that only a few are gifted for these various gifts. And those people today will advocate tongues. They say tongues is for everybody. Everybody should be teaching or speaking in tongues. And they're going to try and get everybody engulfed in this tongue. Well, they're going against the Scripture, for the Scripture makes it very plain that only Son will get it. That Son, God, hands, used to the glory of God and the benefit of man at the beginning of their church age. Like the apostles and prophets, They were the apostles in the foundation, and the prophets in the foundation. But when the foundation was laid in the superstructure enough, then they needed the pastors, evangelists, and teachers, as we pointed out previously. Those just were left behind in the foundation. There are no apostles and prophets today, and don't let anybody tell you the Mormons have got apostles. chosen of God. If they've got any link with the apostles of the New Testament with Judas Iscariot, not with any of the others. What's another question? Do the people who speak in tongues pray that they may interpret? What's verse thirteen saying? Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. No, they get together and they jabber away there for an hour or two, get excited, go on the floor. No one's praying, Lord, give me the gift of interpretation. No, they're not asking for the gift of interpretation. Or they want the gift of tongues. The Bible says here, if they pray for tongues, they should pray for the gift to interpret that tongue. They don't do that. Then again, Another question, while speaking in tongues, do these persons speak mysteries? It says here they should speak mysteries. If so, what are these mysteries? Do they supply a knowledge that cannot be found in the Bible? If so, what knowledge? What revelation is it? Notice verse two, portion, chapter fourteen. For he that speaks of it in a foreign tongue, that's the right word, instead of unknown. It's a foreign tongue. For he that speaketh in a foreign tongue, meaning it's a tongue on earth. And if God gives anybody the gift of tongues, it will be a tongue that's spoken on earth that that person might understand it and get the message. For he that speaketh in a foreign tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God. For no man understandeth it. How be it in the Spirit he speak of mystery. Do you speak mystery? What's a mystery? A mystery something that hasn't been yet revealed. Well, the only mystery I would sit in talking about it, and I had my hands full, and so has everyone else. And that's the mystery given us over in First Timothy, verse sixteen. Great is the mystery of Godliness. God manifests in the flesh. Justified or vindicated by the Spirit. The Spirit of God vindicated Jesus Christ in everything he said and did. He was seen among them. In Isaiah six, the angels who held the pride in God and said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts. The whole earth is full of his glory. Preach unto the Gentiles. Believe on them. The world received up into glory. There you have. the mystery of Godliness. And frankly, if you can understand all that, you don't need to worry about speaking tongues, speaking mysteries in an unknown tongue. You're not going to benefit yourself or benefit anyone else. Do you limit the speaking in tongues to two or the most three? This is what I was trying to tell these young fellas last Sunday night. And then in turn... and only if there's an interpreter, let us look at verse twenty-seven and twenty-nine of chapter forty. If any man speak in a foreign tongue, let it be, and I want to say this, that that's in the imperative mood, thou shalt, in other words, it's a command, the word left. Let him be by two, let him be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course or by order, and let one interpret. Now here you've got three men, and one has got to be an interpreter. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God. let the prophet speak two or three, and let the others judge. If anything be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first one hold his feet, for ye may all prophesy one by one. Is that the way they speak today? By two or three hundred, two or three thousand, they're all talking at the same time, and no one knows what they're saying. the Bible that has strictly said they are to speak, ones that speak in tongues, and the interpreter is to explain the meaning of it. By force, one by one, how foreign today's use of this tongue is from the teachings of the Scripture. And furthermore, do your women keep silent in the assembly or are they allowed to speak? You know, it's very significant, that right in this passage, this whole chapter that has to do with tongues, right about the middle of it, you read these words, and they're very significant. Now, don't get it, feel hard to me, ladies, I didn't write this. Verse thirty-four, what is it to say, in chapter fourteen? Let your women keep silent in the churches, for there is not permitted unto them to speak, but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And you let all the women in the tongue movement keep silent, and the tongue movement will die before morning. And right here in the midst, or this turn movement, as is being described in the Scripture. Women, you keep silent. And that's quite a chore, ladies. God is not the author of confusions. And if everybody's going to talk and jump, then you've got a scene of confusion. and God is not the author of such confusion. Do you pray without interpretation in your gathering? Notice verses thirteen and nineteen. We're going to go over these a couple of times in answering these questions. Verse thirteen of chapter fourteen. Wherefore and him that speaketh in a foreign tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in a foreign tongue and my spirit pray it, but my understanding is unbrutiful, what is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Paul's making it plain that he would only pray in the spirit, or speak in tongues if he were understood. Else, when thou shalt bless with the Spirit, how shall he that occupy the room of the unlearned say, Amen, at thy given of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayeth. For thou thereliest giveest thanks, well, but the other is not edifying. I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than he all, and undoubtedly Because of his pre-missionary journey, he went into places where people did not know the gospel in their language, and that's why Paul, the great pioneer undoubtedly, spoke in many cases in tongues. He said, I'd rather speak five words with my understanding than by my voice I might teach others than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. five words in a tongue that people know and can understand, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue that no one knew. That's one, two thousand, two thousand. Five and ten thousand, one and two thousand. One day this week, I walked into the pharmacy down there, Ducre's and a couple of ladies in there, And one's a bookkeeper, that was in charge for post office. One there's her older sister. I said, ladies, I'd like to ask you to do something. Here you have five and ten thousand. Take five minutes. Take ten thousand minutes. And how many hours and minutes did you come up with? I said, you've got a machine, then I had a machine. Go ahead. And they looked at one and all that, and this one, she said, I don't know. Well, I said, I'll tell you what it is. It's thirty-three hours and twenty minutes. Paul said, I will sooner speak, one minute, or sooner her to speak, one word, for one minute, in a known tongue, in a language that others understood it to be edified, than three, thirty-three hours and twenty minutes of a lot of nonsense that'll edify new one. Now figure it out for yourself, and see, that's not true. Then again, do you accept the commandments which regulate the use of tongues as being absolutely authoritative? because divine inspire do you believe that disobedience to these commandments is disobedience to the Lord, and therefore proof of unspirituality? Notice verse thirty-seven. If any man take himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the thing that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. And if you don't understand these things, you say, Mr. Wilson, that's too deep for me. Like the preacher was preaching, and three men went to hear you. After the meeting, they started discussing the preaching. One said to the other, what did you think of the preaching? Well, he went down pretty deep. What do you think? Well, he stayed down pretty long. Third, what do you think? He came up dry. I hope I won't go down too deep and or stay down too long or come up dry. He says here, if any man think himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. And I'm going to use blunt language right here. If you refuse to accept what this chapter says about tongues, you are described in verse thirty-eight. If any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. Now that's what your Bible says. You're just an ignorant person, if you can't understand the teachings of God's word concerning the tongues. Another thing, are tongues the fruit of the Spirit, and we answered that in the beginning as well, the fruit of the Spirit, are or is because the nine are more or less singular. There's one group that's like one bunch of grids. You say there's one bunch of grids, but there may be thirty, forty grids. Meaning simply this, that if you can't bear one of the fruits, of the Spirit without bearing the other. It's nine or nine, and the tongues are not included. Then think of another question. I wrote this one down for the last one. Are all those meetings that are being conducted and held, are they decent? Are they ordinary? What's the last verse of that chapter, say, verse forty? Let all things be done decently and in order. Or according to Scripture. And I want to tell you one thing, there's a whole lot of indecency going on among this tongue, in this tongue, In other words, they seem to have a lot of close contact or intimacy with the opposite sex. And this is a whole lot more common than is publicly known than we've had. And they've worked themselves up to a frenzy, and they hug one another, and they kiss one another, and anything that tends to that kind of thing is certainly anything but peace. undecent, undecent. And it tells you plainly right there, let everything be done decent. And you're not telling me that a healthy man will own or unhelpful to have contact. Maybe that's why they like these meetings. They'll get a chance to help someone else decide their wife or husband. And here they are. embracing one another, supposed to be weeping and praising the Lord and so on. You're not telling me. No red blood of human being is going to crack at us, not without having unchaste thoughts. But he can't tell me that the Spirit of God led him to do that, or led her to do it. My Bible says abstain from all appearance of evil, and let everything be done decently. and boredom. Well, there are the questions, and there are the answers. I hope this will have some help to you. And if you're not a Christian, all I can say to you that the Gospel is simple, the Lord Jesus used the plainest of speech, the simplest of language, For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish forever but last in life. And what this new tongue movement is doing is just adding a little more confusion to the already confusion that suggested in the religious world today. And people hardly know what to believe. They hardly know what to do. I haven't said things to you that I wouldn't say to my own fool. My sister Olive, who may go home to be with the Lord any minute, she's gone beyond consciousness, she's not taking anything. She's seventy-four living in Windsor, Ontario. When she was about thirty-some years, forty years of age, She was in one of these churches that believed in tongues and in healing. And she would spend hours up the front praying for God to heal someone sick. My mother said, Olive, how can you do that? And living on the back seat, back in the back seat, is your son? having had twenty-nine operations on an all-service leg that won't heal. Everybody gets healed but your child. How is that? When she came to Stratford, where was my hometown, I happened to be home from the south on this trip, and lo and behold, if she wasn't in town that same Sunday, and she was preaching in this other trip. that believe in tongues in here. I was preaching in the chapel. My father said, I wish you'd ever talked to all. I hate to see her leather strait, good singer. I knew quite a bit about the Bible. So when she came home, she was late getting home. Mother and dad had gone to bed. So I said, well, all of I guess you preached tonight, didn't you? Oh, yes. Well, I suppose it was a mixed audience. Oh, yeah. Don't you know what the Bible says? I suffer not a woman that teaches or the usurp authority over the man, and a woman speaks sound in the church. You can speak to all the ladies living your life, the children's living. But if there's a mixed audience, the Word of God says you're exerting authority, and you should be silent. I don't. And furthermore, she said, I pray to the gift of tongues. It would be a whole lot more spiritual than Scripture, all of, if you pray to the gift of hold your tongue. And she went up to her room. I thank God she got to live her time. But the gospel is simple. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. And all this confusion going on today. It's only muddying the water, and making it more difficult for the poor sinner to find the truth. What is the way? How am I to know the truth? Well, I tell you this, friend, wherever Christ is preached, at every meeting, Christ in all of his duty, on his very good If Christ is expounded, if Christ is presented to the congregation, he says, I am the way. I am the truth. I am the light. I am the way. Beside me there is no void. I am the truth. Beside me there is no void. I am the life. Beside me there is no limit. And Paul says, I determined to know nothing among you, say, Jesus Christ, and him testify. You come to know Christ as your Savior, and I think the Spirit of God in you, and the proper reading and teaching of the Scriptures, will straighten you out in an age of confusion. And next Sunday night we'll mention the fact of how confusion of tongues started in the Lent of Genesis, also the tongues in Acts chapter two, and then the tongues in Revelation. chapter five when all tongues will be united and will be singing glory unto the land on the throne shall we pray our father in heaven in the name of our lord jesus christ we come into thy presence we ask thy blessing on thy word although father has been searching of heart for those who may be inclined toward some of these present modern-day delusions. We trust they will accept it as from thyself, it's thy word, and may they accept it as such, bow to it, in spite of it may be tradition, in spite of what they may have been taught, May they compare everything that they believe, with thy word, and have thus saith the Lord, to everything they preach and practice, save any unsaved in our audience, and receive our thanks for our being together in the Lord Jesus' precious name. Amen. Let us sing. In closing, two hundred and sixteen. Invitation hymn, two hundred, or two hundred and seventy, from every soul by sin or breath in the mercy of the Lord, he will surely give you rest by trusting in his word. Only trust him. Only trust Him, only trust Him now. He will save you. He will save you. He will save you now. We'll see in the first verse. No one comes to Christ. The meeting is...
