John Peterson has written over a thousand hymns and gospel songs. Early in his career as a songwriter, he wrote a song that an important secular publisher wanted. He would use the song if John would eliminate the name of Jesus from it and make more reference to heaven. John would have been glad to mention heaven more often, but he would not take the name of Jesus out of the song. John Peterson left the office that day without a contract. He was disappointed but confident he had made the right decision. Here is how he tells what happened next. Suddenly a new song began to take shape in my mind. The Lord Jesus said of himself, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me. The top tunes of the day last only a few weeks or months on the charts. But the songs of praise to the Lord Jesus Christ will never end.
