Charles Allen has written, We come to the forks of life's road and cannot decide which way to turn. There are decisions to be made, and yet it's so hard to decide. We do get lost. We need guidance, and confidently David in the twenty-third Psalm declares, He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness, in the right paths. Doubtless David remembered his own experiences as a shepherd. He knew that a sheep has no sense of direction. A dog, a cat, or a horse, if lost, can find its way back. They seem to have a compass within themselves, not so with a sheep. The sheep has very poor eyes. Palestinian fields... were covered with narrow paths over which the shepherds led their sheep to pasture. Some of these paths led to a precipice over which the sheep might fall to its death. Other paths led up a blind alley. But some paths led to green pastures and still waters. The sheep followed the shepherd, knowing it was walking in the right path. The sheep was willing to trust that somewhere to the shepherd's judgment. The wise man says, In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Shepherds of love, you knew I had known a thrill. Shepherd of love, you knew that I'd lost my way. You saw and found me, laid around me, strong arms to carry me home. or alarmingly, never again will I roam. Shepard of love, believe your My Lord, my God, Shepherd of life, forever I'll stay by your side. The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his namesake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Thou anointest my head with oil. My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Yes, the shepherd of love knows that we've gone astray. He's called the Good Shepherd and the Great Shepherd in the Bible. He wants to be your shepherd. Tell him you've gone astray. Tell him you want him to save you, and then to be your guide through life and on into eternal life. Or alarm me, but never again will I rule.
