Morning, friend, time again for moments of melody, a five-minute capsule to help you begin your day with a song. A little five-year-old girl named Margaret was a frequent visitor in the home of a neighbor. One of the never-ending wonders which she pondered as she visited this family was their special prayer time. She noticed how the daddy of the home read out of a big black book, and afterwards he talked to God, as if he was very near and dear to them all. Sometimes the family would also join in singing a song of praise. One day when she had been present at such a devotional period, the mother asked, Margaret, don't you read the Bible and pray at your home?" The little girl shook her head sadly and replied, No, ma'am, God doesn't seem to live at our house like He does at yours. Margaret's home was by no means an underprivileged one, and yet, if that little one wanted to become acquainted with the Heavenly Father, she had to go next door. He just wasn't included. in her family circle. Today in our verses, the Lord Jesus takes up the book of Isaiah, that great book, and reads from it. Then the Lord Jesus came to Nazareth where he had been brought up. He went into the synagogue there and his custom was on the Sabbath day and stood up to read. The book given to him was the book of the prophet Isaiah. And so he opened it and found the place where the words ran, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. He has anointed me, and sent me out to preach the gospel to the poor, to restore the brokenhearted, to bid the prisoners go free, and the blind receive their sight, to set the oppressed at liberty, to proclaim a year when men may find acceptance with the Lord. Then he shut the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. All those who were in the synagogue fixed their eyes on him. Thus he began speaking to them. This scripture which I have read in your hearing is today fulfilled. All bore testimony to him and were astonished at the gracious words that came out of his mouth. Why, they said, Is not this the son of Joseph? Then he said to them, No doubt you will tell me, as the Proverbs says, Physician heal thyself, do here in thy own country all that we have heard of thy doing in Capernaum. And he said, Believe me, no prophet finds acceptance in his own country. Why, you may be sure of this, there were many widows among the people of Israel in the days of Elijah, and a great famine came over all the land. after the heavens had remained shut for three years and six months. But Elijah was not sent to any of these. He was sent to a widow woman of Seraphah, which belongs to Sidon. And there were many lepers among the people of Israel in the days of the prophet Elisha, but none of them. It was Nahum and the Syrian who was made clean. All those who were in the synagogue were full of indignation at hearing this. They rose up and thrust him out of the city and took him to the brow of the hill in which their city was built to throw him over it. But he passed through the midst of them, and he went on his way. Did you notice that the Lord Jesus came to restore the brokenhearted? So many broken-hearted people today, it's the Lord Jesus that can restore the broken-hearted. You tell him your troubles, about your sin, and he'll help you.
