One day the great general, after noticing the slothfulness with which the soldier performed his duty, went to him and requested that he either change his name or or become a better soldier, and cease to dishonor the name of his general. Did it ever occur to you that your actions, your words, your thoughts may bring dishonor to that worthy name, the name of the Lord Jesus? In our Scripture reading today, the Lord Jesus Christ warns of the way the scribes were living. When I'm with him, when I'm with him, the Pharisee And in my heart I feel the thrill of glory When I'm with him When I'm with him The blessed fellowship my soul has come Within whose sweetest name is Noel, In Christ the riches of those grace of our bond, And joy's eternal form of love. When I'm with him, when I'm with him, the Pharisee of the world I'm with him. And in my heart I feel the thrill of God. When I'm with me, when I'm with you, I feel the thrill of glory when I'm with you. And now we're going to open the sacred scriptures to the gospel according to St. Mark chapter twelve. Then Jesus said openly, still teaching in the temple, What do the scribes mean by saying that Christ is to be the son of David? David himself was moved by the Holy Spirit to say, The Lord said to my master, Sit on my right hand while I make thy enemies a footstool under thy feet. Thus David himself calls Christ his master. How can he also be his son? And the multitude at large listened to him readily. This was part of the teaching he gave them. Beware of the scribes who enjoy walking in long robes and having their hands kissed in the marketplace, and the first seats in the synagogues, and the chief places at feasts, who swallow up the property of widows, and under cover of their long prayers, Their sentence will be all the heavier for that. The Lord Jesus made some very strong warnings concerning the scribes. Here's a little prayer poem.
